Through the social and charity work of my father and mother, my own role as a father and husband, and a call to service by our president, I have become increasingly motivated to "get involved" in fighting the enslavement and exploitation of women and children. And yet human trafficking and exploitation (the modern parlance for slavery) has burgeoned to the extent that there are now more slaves than existed during the transatlantic slave trade of the 18th and 19th centuries! As someone with a background in history, I find this deeply troubling.
We don't realize the that human slavery and trafficking can go on right under our noses; from Atlanta to Los Angeles, from the suburbs to the countryside....this is silent terrorism with devastating consequences.
Think about it this way: what is terrorism? Some 2,998 people died on 9/11. A tragedy by any standard. Now consider that 25-30 million human beings are exploited and enslaved through threat of death or dismemberment to themselves or family members. ...I contend that this is perhaps the greatest terrorism propagated by well organized criminals and our own failure to acknowledge its existence! The thought of a child being exploited for 'entertainment purposes' is almost too much to bear. Yet the department of justice indicates that each year, some 60,000 children are abducted in the United States of American alone....many quickly taken out of country and sold into prostitution or private entertainment. Many countries of the world refuse to accept the reality that this exists. And the United Nations is ever so slow in adopting resolutions after long, laborious committiees....and for what?....to what end if most people dont even realize or acknowledge the extent of the problem. In our own beloved America, from Atlanta, Georgia to New York city, to the suburbs and the countryside, human trafficking and enslavement exists.
A friend recently said that there are gobs of things to get involved with. In my mind, the death and torture of innocent people is highest on that list. When it involves little children, my conscience cannot turn away it. Thus, I encourage you, to visit the following sites which provide sobbering insight into a very dark world that continues to grow.
